Factors Affecting Girls’ Participation in Sports at College Level

Abstract

Background: Socio-culture, financial and religious factors play significant role in sports participation of girls. It was the basic theme for conducting this research study to determine the main factors affecting girls’ participation in sports. Objectives: Main objectives of the study were to analyze the effect of social, cultural, religion and financial factors on the sports participation of college girls in district Lakki Marwat (KPK). Methods: A sample size of 90 players from different colleges of district Lakki Marwat was selected through purposive sampling method. Data were analyzed through the Descriptive statistics, correlation, regression analysis and one sample t-test. Results: The average age of the participants was 17.89 ± 0.97 years. Out of the total respondents, 66% were studying at the graduate level and 34% were studying at the intermediate level. Over all reliability statistics of the scales was 0.79. The social, cultural, religious and financial factors of the college girls’ were above moderate level. Sport participation of the college girls was low and had positive but significant (p<0.05) correlation with finance (r=0.30) and religion (r=0.31) factors while it had high moderate positive and significant (p<0.05) correlation with cultural (r=0.53) and social (r=0.55) factors. The social, cultural and financial factors had significant (p<0.05) influence on sport participation of the college girls. Further, the lack of financial resources had negative influence on girls’ sport participation. Conclusions: It is concluded that the social, cultural, religious and financial factors have significant influence on sport participation of the college girls. Therefore, it is recommended that government departments, sponsoring units as well as parents should come forward to pave the way of the young girls to proper participation in sports activities.
