Abstract

How narratives of development might be tied to a sociological theory in which the material or
technical is related to the social is a topic of growing interest in human geography. The way Science
and Technology Studies (STS) handles this separation is by highlighting how closely connected
technology and society are. This special section's research of ecological knowledge and challenged
visions of development in Southeast Asia is driven by this process of co-production between science
and technology on the one hand and social and political order on the other. In order to investigate
how particular ecological knowledge practises and forms of technological expertise co-produce
contested developmental imaginaries and socio-political power, we collaborate with critical
geographers of development who are drawing on ideas from the STS literature
