Abstract

The purpose of this study is to conduct a review of the existing research on corporate governance. The purpose of this project is to bring together all of the information we currently have about this area of study, analyses how it has developed over time, and propose new avenues for research. In the course of doing a review of previous and recent research on various governance measures and the effect they have on business performance, we came to the conclusion that the empirical results for many of the governance mechanisms that were investigated are inconsistent. We propose that the inconsistent results are the result of applying a set of governance measures based on the assumption that "one size fits all," which is ineffective for all types of organizations due to the varying degrees of organizational complexity and disparities in ownership structures. As a consequence of this, we look into more technologically advanced methods, such as machine learning. We have reason to assume that this area of inquiry may not only lead to improvements but also to transformations.
